You don't inevitability an extra IDE card. Each IDE cable can support 2 devices, master and slave. So with two IDE channel (Primary and Secondary), you can support 4 drives. Also, most extra IDE cards are only complicated drive controllers or RAID controllers, which only support intricate drives, and not optical disks.
You can easily use an expansion card next to more IDE channels. If you put your OS complicated drive on the expansion card though, you may need to variation a setting in your bios to enlighten it to boot off of the expansion card.

Remember, respectively channel can with the sole purpose write or read from one device at a time, so even though the IDE cable has two plugs on it for two devices, you will gain more speed by merely using one plug per cable.
