If you penny-pinching that the drive is not recognised in device commissioner (it shows a warning), double click the shown device and read what the problem is. Try plugging it in another USB port. I'm assuming you enjoy Windows XP or above (if not, Windows 98 or ME or 2000) you may need a driver. Go to the manufacturer website to find one.

If the device IS installed correctly but you cannot see the drive in My Computer (for example), you may call for to partition the drive and format it. In Control Panel jump into Administrative tools and then into Computer Management and consequently into Disk Management - Locate the drive here, right click it to create a new dividing wall and format the drive - To find out more- look in the help out of Computer Management and look in How to... and Manage straightforward volumes from the help contents.

Hope this help
Unreadable in Dev Manager or by window ?

If it's by Windows, try using the Disk Manager in your computer executive to check and see if it's partitioned and formatted.
Buy a program called Acronis Disk Director 10 and use that.

Very apposite program for quickly setting up drives and you can also cause a useful bootable disc that does what the Windows version does.
Go to the Maxtor site and download Max blaster 4 it will find the full ammount of disk drive and will even tolerate you format it and install os
