Your unfamiliarity near computer terminoligy is disturbing.

Basically, yes, yes you can. To ensure compatibility at your skill level, formulate sure that the type of RAM you are purchasing matches the type that you are currently. For example if you are currently using PC-2100, form sure the new RAM match. The easiest way to do this is to simply bring your current RAM beside you to a computer store to show a sales assistant.
i construe sdram 's are rare immediately ... and it would be very expensive
sure
depends on your mother board... check it out... if you do own a vacant slot.. so you can.. if non market your 256 and buy 512.. remember when buying if its compatible to your mother board
Your RAM upgradation is based basically on your motherboard configuration.

since u say that you own PIII 930 GHz, we assume that ur motherboard supports upto 512 MB of RAM.
Friend if the it mother board have one slot of memory bare...you can put the memory
sure

but SDRAM is rare very soon and it will very costly
