Because you 'abused' your disk. The previous answers be all accurate and covered adjectives the bases that I can withdraw. Those old 'floppies' as they are call because the original ones be larger and the disk was much thinner than the second classmates ones. They are very sensitive to warmness, magnetic field, writing on a label that's already affixed to the disk & extreme low or glorious temps. Leaving one in a coup¨| is just asking for it to bring deleted!

here is a reason it say do not keep surrounded by sunlight, near magnets and above and below clear in your mind temperatures

It be probably heat. The surrounding substance is a thin piece of plastic, which is well changed by heat. On another document, im surprised people still use floppies. I do too, but not often.
